A free, practical checklist covering everything from pre-launch planning to going live, so nothing gets missed on your next website project.
Whether you're planning a brand new website or finally fixing up an old one, it's easy to miss something important along the way. A missing contact form, unoptimised images, no analytics tracking set up before launch. Small gaps like these are common, and they usually surface at the worst possible time: after the site is already live.
This checklist breaks the process into four stages, from early planning through to launch, so you can work through it in order and know nothing important has slipped through.
Before You Start: Planning Checklist
Good websites are planned before they're designed. Skipping this stage is the most common reason projects run over budget or need reworking later.
- Define the primary goal of the website (leads, sales, bookings, information)
- Identify your target audience and what they need to find quickly
- Map out a simple sitemap (which pages you need and how they connect)
- Gather your brand assets (logo, brand colours, fonts, existing photography)
- Research 2 to 3 competitor websites to see what works and what doesn't
- Set a realistic budget and timeline before briefing a designer or agency
Design Checklist
This is where the site starts to take visual shape. The goal here is consistency and usability, not just aesthetics.
- Confirm the site is fully mobile responsive across phone, tablet, and desktop
- Check colour contrast is accessible and readable (not just visually appealing)
- Use consistent typography and spacing across every page
- Make navigation simple and predictable, with no more than 5 to 7 main menu items
- Ensure buttons and links are clearly clickable, especially on mobile
- Include a clear visual hierarchy so visitors know what to look at first
Content Checklist
A beautifully designed page with weak content still won't convert. This stage is just as important as the visual design.
- Write clear, benefit-focused copy for every page, not just feature lists
- Include a clear call-to-action on every key page (not just the homepage)
- Optimise all images (compressed file sizes, descriptive alt text)
- Proofread every page for typos and broken sentences before launch
- Add social proof where relevant (testimonials, reviews, client logos)
- Make sure contact details are accurate and consistent across every page
Technical Checklist
This is the part that's easy to forget because it's invisible to most visitors, right up until something goes wrong.
- Test page load speed and fix anything that's noticeably slow
- Confirm all forms actually send correctly and go to the right inbox
- Set up basic on-page SEO (page titles, meta descriptions, header structure)
- Install analytics tracking so you can measure performance from day one. If you haven't done this yet, our Google Analytics 4 setup guide walks through it properly
- Check the site works correctly across major browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge)
- Set up an SSL certificate so the site loads securely (https, not http)
Pre-Launch Checklist
The final pass before going live. This is where small oversights get caught before customers see them.
- Test every link on the site to check nothing is broken
- Double-check the site displays correctly on real mobile devices, not just a browser preview
- Confirm search engines are allowed to index the site (no accidental “noindex” tags left in from development)
- Set up 301 redirects if you're replacing an existing website, to preserve existing SEO value
- Back up the site before and immediately after launch
- Do a final full read-through of every page as if you were a first-time visitor

What Happens After Launch
A checklist gets you to launch day in good shape, but a website is never really “finished.” Once you understand roughly what a project like this costs and how long it takes, our guide on website design costs in 2026 is a good next read. We'll also be publishing a detailed website build timeline guide soon.
If you'd rather hand the whole process to a team that handles planning, design, development, and launch from start to finish, our website design and development service covers exactly that.
